POP pioneers Frankie & the Heartstrings have been invited to take part in BBC Radio 6Music’s first festival.

The band will be hosting a pop-up version of their shop, Pop Recs Ltd, at the much-anticipated event and will be the only North East outlet to do so.

Impressed by the band’s efforts to create a music, arts and culture hub in their home city, the influential music station asked them to be part of the festival, which will feature more than 30 artists and DJs across three stages in Manchester.

Frontman Frankie Francis, from Houghton, said: “6Music came to us about a month ago and asked us to be involved. Michael’s actually at a wedding that weekend so we can’t perform as a band, but we will be setting up a pop-up shop selling North East music, art and selling coffees.”

The five-piece band set up the shop in Fawcett Street last June in the derelict former Tourist Information Office, and it has played host to a number of free gigs by high-profile musicians including Badly Drawn Boy and Edwyn Collins. BBC Radio 6Music Festival will take place on February 28 and March 1, at the Victoria Warehouse in Manchester.
