DURHAM Cathedral has been voted one of the top 20 free tourist attractions in the UK.
The historic building was the only North-East attraction to feature in the rankings, which were released yesterday.
The cathedral was 19th in the list, which was put together by Visit England.
Nine of the top 10 attractions on the Visit England list are in London, with the British Museum and the National Gallery taking the two top spots.
Ruth Robson, head of marketing and events at the cathedral, said: “It is wonderful to see Durham Cathedral ranking so highly among some of our country’s most popular attractions.
“Our submitted visitor numbers do not include anyone attending services or special events such as Lumiere, which attracted 175,000 to the city over four days, so we are thrilled to be doing so well.
“Durham Cathedral is a special place for many people, whether they be worshippers, local residents, former students or one of our many tourists from around the world.
“The Chapter of the Cathedral is committed to maintaining free admission.”
