A SOAP opera fan has received star-studded backing for her book about the Coronation Street star Hayley Cropper.

Glenda Young, executive assistant at the University of Sunderland, is a lifelong fan and the editor of an acclaimed Coronation Street Blog.

Along with the blog, Glenda has written A Perfect Duet. The Diary of Roy and Hayley Cropper. An Unofficial Coronation Street Companion, packed with information about Roy and Hayley’s storylines. Glenda has now rounded up the highs and lows from the characters’ first meeting to Hayley’s sad farewell and put it in print for other fans to enjoy.

The book has the support of Hayley herself, actress Julie Hesmondhalgh.

She said: “What a treat this lovely little book is.”

Hayley was one of Coronation Street’s most popular residents, as the first transgender character to have such a major role in a TV soap and for her connection with the street’s quiet man Roy Cropper.

Julie added: “I cannot lie, it was a bit emotional reading through it; reliving, in brief, 16 of the happiest years of my life, namely those spent playing Hayley, in partnership with the great David Neilson as Roy. And there is so much I’d forgotten.”

Glenda said: “From their first meeting, Hayley Patterson and Roy Cropper were destined to become one of television’s most loved and enduring couples. From their declaration of love, two weddings, the trials of being ‘different’ and the heartbreak of illness, the story of Roy and Hayley is one that has touched the hearts of millions.”

Glenda argues the couple are more than the comedy characters they are often portrayed as: “Their story raised the awareness of transgender issues, sparked debates on the ‘right to die’ argument, and much more,” she said.

“This book is written by a fan for the fans, and will take you to the heart of the Croppers’ relationship, and is told with love and admiration for the characters.”

A Perfect Duet is published by FBS Publishing Ltd, and is available from all good bookstores and online, in paperback and as an eBook.
