The 20-year-old soldier was serving at Catterick Camp when he robbed Martha Ann Dodd, an 83-year-old widow from Darlington, and battered her to death with a hammer.
Although Chandler was the last to be executed at Durham, the death penalty was not abolished until November, 1965.
The last hangings took place in August, 1964.
