Well what a week of history. I want to say what an historic week but I have been amazed at how many important and influential broadcasters and media companies have used the "a historic week".
I may be a little pedantic occasionally but that incorrect use of not putting an 'n' on the word which precedes 'historic' really does aggravate me. Anyway more on language a little later.
Obama is the President then. I hope this will transfer i
nto print as sometimes things don't from radio. Did you, like me, think things were a little strange when Obama started getting the crowd chanting his new mantra "Yes we can" . I felt pleased that he'd left the "It's time for change" behind but when the new phrase was repeated again and again in his acceptance speech it set me thinking. There had been a guy who had said he was a Plumber who was worried about the thought of starting his own company as the Tax Laws that John McCain was going to bring in would have left him penniless. For about two weeks after all the talk was of "Joe the plumber" on both sides of the Presidential speeches. I decided that it was Obama's answer to Joe to bring in this phrase – do you remember the theme tune to the TV show Bob the Builder- "Yes we can" – I knew you would.
Bonfire night was spent at home for me. I was asked to work at a big display but had a Doctors appointment that morning and wasn't sure what the Doc was going do to me that day, being of a certain age. I said that I might not be able to perform that night which as it turned out was incorrect as they just prescribed some tablets. So I spent the night watching other people's fireworks going off. Fantastic - thank you – as you know, they were great.
A few words on the Internet invention Facebook. I first started using the brilliant invention in February 2006, I had felt that my time working abroad was coming to an end and I found the idea of keeping in touch a great idea. However things have grown so huge now with Facebook that it worries me who will be watching my every word now. When you have friends all around the World, who have friends all around the World, you don't know who might be watching your conversations and photographs you put on there. When a Canadian friend of mine commented on me wanting to enjoy some Fish and Chips on a recent trip to Hull for a football match and when I got another message from someone elsewhere in the World asking "How's your tattoo?" I thought about Big Brother watching me.
I don't know what your thoughts are on our ex England Manager Steve McLaren but I have a theory. After leaving his tenure after the wonderful sight of him with his umberella at the disaster that was his last game against Croatia he went on to become the FC Twente manager in Holland. There was what most of us thought to be a bit of a cruel video posted on You Tube which was picked up by most of the Presshh and Media where he had adopted an Englisshh sshhpeaking Duttsssch accsshent. I think he was prepared to let that happen as he knew who hissh team would be meeting in the EUFA Cup Manchesshhhter ….ity.
