NEWCASTLE Vipers’ Elite League ice hockey season ends this weekend - amid fears for the club’s future.
Ninth-placed Vipers, who have missed out on a play-off place, welcome Dundee Stars to Whitley Bay tonight (7pm) before heading to Dundee tomorrow (6pm).
Rumours abound that the club will not survive to play on next season, but netminder Charlie Effinger is determined to finish the campaign with a flourish for the fans.
He said: “We are going to compete to win games this weekend, regardless of our position in the play-off race. Since early December, this group of players have kept a never-say-die mentality. We’ll all look to carry this mindset into our weekend games.
“My experience with the Vipers’ organisation has been a great challenge, but very rewarding. I am also proud that we have kept hockey alive in the North East for the 2010-2011 season.”
