Thompson’s women seal triple crown

THOMPSON Park secured the Sunderland Women’s Bowling Association triples championship with an impressive final win over Roker Park, writes Richard Mckie.

In front of a good crowd, Kathy Hulley, Florence Rodenby and Anne Raine came up trumps to see off Ann Candlish, Pat Johnson and Maureen Firth.

The early exchanges saw Raine open up an 8-3 lead after eight ends before Firth responded with a couple of threes over the next three ends to level at 9-9.

With some fine conversion shots on show, the Thompson Park triple gradually ground out a 13-9 lead with three ends to play.,

The 16th end proved decisive as Raine collected a four to lead 17-9. Roker Park shook hands on the game after falling 17-9 behind in the next end.

In the semi-finals, Thompson Park squeezed past Sunderland’s Janet Sykes 16-15, while Roker Park convincingly beat S. Rinaldi (Sunderland) 26-3.

H The top two in the Earl Cup First Division face a crucial clash on Monday night, with leaders Silksworth visiting Houghton Dairy Lane.

Silksworth extended their advantage at the top with a 7-0 win over winless Seaham Town this week, while Dairy Lane outgunned Ryhope 6-1.

Roker Park and South Hylton saw off Sunderland and Hetton Workmen’s respectively to fill the top two spots in Division Two, while Washington made it four straight Third Division wins with a 7-0 defeat of Pemberton.

With each of the three Swan Cup divisions a team down, the standings are fragmented, however Houghton Dairy Lane remain unbeaten at the top of Division One after a cracking 5-2 success at Silksworth. Holders Usworth recorded a good 6-1 victory at Houghton Town.

Roker Park are five points clear of Herrington Workmen in Division Two, while Hylton CW are the early Third Division leaders.

Houghton Dairy Lane B and Barnes West End are tied at the top of the Harold Howey Trophy First Division, following 4-0 wins over Ryhope A and Chester-le-Street A respectively.

Hylton CW A are top in Division Two, but only two and a half points separate the top six. Roker Park B notched their first win of the season, 4-0 against Sunderland A.

Roker Marine B are setting the pace in Division Three, in which Pemberton B beat their A team 3-1.
