THOMPSON Insurance A have extended their lead at the top of the Sunderland and District Table Tennis division one to 9 points after brushing aside West CA A 9-1, writes Kevin Wilson.

Geoff Salter was the only West player to put up any resistance, getting the better of Chris Blake 3-0. Neil McMaster nearly matched his team mate but was eventually beaten by Blake 11-8 in the fifth end.

The rest of the match was a stroll for the league leaders with Andrew Wilkinson and Darren McVitie never really being tested.

St Chad’s strengthened their claim for the runners-up with a hard fought 6-4 win against St Gabriel’s A. David Robson remained unbeaten in the match for St Gabriel’s with three singles wins and George Gibson defeated David Bissett. St Chads hit back with Keith Weatherby and Jimmy Scope taking two victories and Bissett defeating Tom Bainbridge in four games. A victory in the doubles for Weatherby and Scope earned the win for St Chads.

At the other end of the table, relegation threatened Silksworth IM A and Sacriston St Bedes A battled to a 5-5 draw. Alan Bickle was the best player on show taking three wins for Silksworth.

Bob Sanderson and Howard Brown backed him up with a victory each but that was all the home side could manage.

Paul Dale took two victories for Sacriston and Tony Taylor and Kevin Smith one each to give their team a chance of avoiding defeat for the second time this season. This they duly did with victory in the doubles.

In the only match in division two this week, West CA B put themselves back in the promotion race with a 7-3 win against St John A.

David Snowdon returned to the team with good effect, as he won his three singles matches and, with Alan Whitwham, took the doubles.

Whitwham was not to be outdone by his team mate and recorded three victories himself. All of the St John players, Isvan Soos, Craig Burton and Craig Hilton, won one of their singles but they couldn’t record the crucial fourth win to earn their side a point.

Boldon Tennis Club had a busy week in division three, missing out 7-3 against St Aidans B and then recording their second win in the Sunderland league, an 8-2 victory against bottom side St John B.

In their match against St John, David Pringle cruised to three victories for Boldon as he has done so often this season. Both of his team mates assisted him with two wins, particularly impressive was Kenny Coates’ 3-2 victory against Viv Ford. Derek Buller was the only St John player to put a dent in the score line as he managed two victories.
