Swimming: Another golden day for Sunderland
City of Sunderland ASC swimmers were again outstanding in their home pool in the Northumberland and Durham 1500m Championships – one of the toughest events on the regional swimming calendar.
In the girls 14 to 17 years age group; Danielle Huskinson (16 years) produced a mature and very well paced display to swim her way to the championship title in the Open women's category, in a time of 17minutes 31.02 seconds.
Silver medallist from the 2009 National Youth Championships, Alexandra Robinson also claimed a bronze; while 17-year-old Eleni Papadoplous claimed the British Disability Record for S10 class, to add to the host of records she bagged in 2009.
Emma Sinclair (13 years) swam her way to a new lifetime best taking Silver in a time of 18 minutes 37.62 seconds in the girls' 11 to 13 years age group. The ever improving Lucy Walton (12 years) claimed bronze.
The City had other impressive performances from Adam Taylor (13), Lucy Ellis (13), Dima Isakau (15), Rachel Sinclair (16) and Matthew Bell (16).
For the individual age groups, the City of Sunderland ASC girls performed to a particularly high standard with Lucy Walton taking the gold medal for 12-years-olds while Georgina Lamb (gold), Laura Taylor (silver) and Jess Thompson (bronze) made it a clean sweep for the Sunderland girls in the 11-year-old age group.
James Burns also won bronze in the 12-year-old boys category.
* Jonny Carlisle continued with his fine form from last year to win the 17-18 years 100 backstroke in a best time of 58.57 the Burns Meet in Sheffield.
He was just pipped for gold in the 200 backstroke by 0.10 second by Andrew Donaldson of Loughborough University taking the silver medal in an excellent time of 2.07.14.
Patrick Callan was Sunderland's other top-10 finisher with good performances in the 100 breaststroke (9th place) and 200 breaststroke (10th place).
