Manager Roy Keane told the Echo: "Yes, there has been interest in Greg and it's something that we are looking at.
"There hasn't been any firm bid yet as things stand but it is a situation that is on-going."
Halford (left) arrived at the club in the close season with Sunderland hoping that a player who was Reading's record signing this time last year, could nail down the right back spot and make his own.
But he has rarely convinced in his few appearances in the Premiership this season.
And it looks like Sunderland will look to cash in and raise money from his sale to increase their own funds in the transfer market.
Sunderland have several players who are surplus to requirements at the club and with Roy Keane saying he is making his mind up all the time about players, there might even be a surprise departure or two.
Most of the speculation has surrounded players who it has become clear are not wanted long term.
But clubs are circling for some of Sunderland's first team squad.
And it might be that the Black Cats will listen to offers as the manager tries to bring in key new signings in the transfer window.
Meanwhile, there has been interest in two of the players that Keane signed in his first week in the Sunderland job.
He told the Echo: "We've had a few calls about David Connolly and also about Graham Kavanagh but there is nothing sorted with either player at this moment in time.
"Kav is talking to a number of clubs I know and we'll just have to wait and see if there is a deal there that suits him."
