SUNDERLAND Hockey Club are revelling in a double promotion success.

The firsts clinched the North East League Division One title in convincing style, while the thirds won promotion as runners-up in Division Four.

Matt Dench skippered the firsts to the championship with a resounding 5-1 win over Stockton seconds at the Raich Carter Centre, leaving the Teessiders to face a relegation play-off.

But Sunderland had to show real character to claim the crown, having fallen behind against the run of play to a reverse stick shot following a free hit on the edge of the home side’s D.

The setback, though, merely inspired Sunderland to respond, and they quickly equalised, when Craig Togher finished off a short corner routine from close range.
