Sunderland fighting for North League survival

SUNDERLAND Broom firsts have the penultimate match of their North League season on Saturday, with their future still in the balance.

Andy Gayner’s men – sitting in second bottom spot in a relegation play-off place, two points above Leeds Adel Carnegie – face a tricky trip to Leeds to take on Chapeltown (1.30pm). The Wearsiders managed 3-3 draw at home to fourth-top Chapeltown earlier in the season. Broom’s final match is at home to Marton Furness next Saturday.

In the North East League’s Intermediate 1, Sunderland seconds are without a game this weekend, but have three more matches, including an away double header next week.

H Durham University firsts’ season ended in disappointing fashion with a 6-0 mauling at Sheffield Hallam in the England Hockey League’s Conference North.

Sheffield’s success, coupled with an 8-0 rout of Preston, saw them lift the championship by a point from Bowdon. Matthew Hodgson’s Durham side finished third, 11 points off top spot but five clear of fourth.

H In the Investec Women’s League’s Conference North, Durham University ended in second place – six points behind champs Beeston – following a 2-0 defeat to Cannock, who avoided bottom spot by a point.
