JACK Colback has emerged as a January transfer target for West Brom and Swansea according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The paper claims that both clubs would like to tempt Sunderland in the current window, knowing that the 24-year-old utility player’s contract is set to expire this summer.

Killingworth-born Colback has been free to talk to foreign clubs since the start of the month but wants to stay in the Premier League

And although he is yet to agree a new contract, there’s every chance Colback will signing a new and improved contract with Sunderland - the club the he has been with since the age of 10 - should the Black Cats stay in the top flight.

“I expect to be here at the end of January,” Colback told The Journal.

“The transfer window has nothing to do with us as players. It’s the people above who sort that out and we just have to get on with it.”

There is interest in Colback from around the Premier League, with Everton strongly tipped to lead the chase should he be made available.

Gus Poyet is an admirer of Colback, as were his predecessors in the Sunderland hot seat, Paolo Di Canio and Martin O’Neill.

And the Uruguayan will want to hold on to Colback, seeing him as a valuable player in the battle against relegation.

It is possible though that should Sunderland have a poor January in their league games against Fulham and Southampton and Stoke City - hugely strengthening the prospect of relegation - , the Black Cats might be tempted to cash in on asset who would leave in the summer for nothing.
