Sunderland winger Johnson out to win England place back

ADAM Johnson has pledged to regain his place in the England squad after admitting he has only shown “tiny glimpses” of his ability for Sunderland.

Johnson has been left out of Roy Hodgson’s last two England squads after failing to add to his 12 international caps since arriving at the Stadium of Light during the summer.

The £10million winger impressed in England’s 2-1 friendly win against Italy in August, just 10 days before he joined the Black Cats, but then was forced to pull out of September’s World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine through injury.

Although Johnson was included in the squad for October’s internationals against San Marino and Poland, he was left on the bench for both games.

But Hodgson has snubbed Johnson completely for England’s friendlies against Sweden in November, and Brazil, last week, with the 25-year-old aware that he needs to impress in the Premier League if he is to catch the eye of the national team boss.

Johnson told the Echo: “It’s always difficult because I have been in the squad for a while and then I’ve been overlooked for the last couple of games.

“I’ve just got to get my head down and get better really.

“If I do that then I am confident that I can work my way back into the squad.”

Johnson has started 23 of Sunderland’s 25 top-flight games since his August switch after becoming frustrated at being restricted to a bit-part role with reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

But the former Middlesbrough man accepts his form has been inconsistent since his return to the North East.

“The big thing for me was the chance to play week in and week out,” added Johnson.

“I haven’t been used to that for a while. It’s always good to be in the side and starting games.

“But the key word, in terms of form, is consistency. I think I’ve only shown tiny glimpses of my best form over the five or six months that I have been here.

“It’s difficult for all players – you know it isn’t going to be rosy all the time – but you just have to come out the other end of it.”
