SUNDERLAND have completed the signing of striker Danny Graham from Swansea.

The signing ends a pursuit of the player by Black Cats’ boss Martin O’Neill which began at the start of the January transfer window and which has been almost as dogged as his quest to bring in Steven Fletcher last summer.

The deal has regularly been reported as on and then off and this morning there was a last-minute bid by Middlesbrough to hijack the move.

But O’Neill has got his man and is pleased to be looking towards the remainder of the season with a quartet of forwards – Graham, Steven Fletcher, Stephane Sessegnon and Connor Wickham – which he feels comfortable with.

He said: “We’re delighted to have Danny and I genuinely think he’ll do well for us.

“He has a real desire to do well.

“I saw him from afar last season when he played very well in a system which seemed to suit him.

“I think he can fit in and score a few goals for us.

“We want to be less reliant on Steven Fletcher scoring the goals and I think Danny will alleviate the load.”

Graham becomes Sunderland’s third signing of the window following the arrivals of £3.8million Alfred N’Diaye and on-loan centre-half Kader Mangane.

The Gateshead-born front man started his career in the North East making his deubt as an 18-year old for Middlesbrough where he was a team-mate of Lee Cattermole and Adam Johnson before moving to Carlisle United.

He was at Carlisle United for two seasons and was the Cumbrians leading goalscorer before moving to Watford where he scored 41 goals in two seasons.

He joined Swansea in 2011 and last season was the Welsh outfit’s leading scorer with 14 goals.

He has been allocated the number nine shirt at Sunderland.
