MARTIN O’Neill has confirmed that skipper Lee Cattermole is set for a spell on the spell on the sidelines after damaging his knee in the midweek game against Queens Park Rangers.
Cattermole was hurt in the opening minutes of Tuesday’s game when he went in for a 50:50 ball with Samba Diakite.
And the suspicion immediately afterwards was that the skipper could have damaged medial ligaments which would rule him out for up to a couple of months.
O’Neil revealed today that the club was still in the process of assessing the injury.
He said: “Lee Cattermole has travelled to London today to see a specialist.
“We don’t have a proper update yet but he’s going to be out for some time.”
The manager insisted though that he has options to cover for the captain – which could include a recall for on-loan David Meyler, once his 28-day minimum recall period is up at Hull City.
Today he said minds were turning towards the Norwich City game this weekend and a chance to improve on two home games which have yielded just one point.
“Training has been fine,” he said.
“The players are still in very good spirits and looking forward to the game at the weekend.
“Norwich are on a good run.
“I watched them on Wednesday against Southampton - they are strong and durable and will cause problems.
“They have won a couple of big games at Carrow Road where they are particularly strong with wins over Manchester United and Arsenal and I think they’ll be looking at any points away from home are bonuses for them.
“They will certainly be up for the job this weekend but I can promise you so will we.”
