Phil Bardsley, Carlos Cuellar and Wes Brown are all on the road back to full fitness, Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill confirmed today, writes Graeme Anderson.

Bardsley played in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Middlesbrough this afternoon – a match which also included potential new signing James McFadden.

And Cuellar has been involved in training sessions, while fellow centre-back Brown has finally started back on light training.

O’Neill said: “The Middlesbrough game is primarily for Phil Bardsley to get fitness, but James McFadden was down to play and I’m hoping to talk to his agent about a possible move.

“The situation regarding him is encouraging.”

He added: “Phil Bardsley is doing fine, he’s joined in a few training sessions and it’s about getting fit.

“Carlos is back in training which is great news, as is the fact that Wes has also started to get involved.

“There’s no doubt that the fortnight coming up for the international break is likely to beneficial to all three in terms of upping their match fitness levels.”
