Sunderland has a new world champion
Seventeen-year-old Adam Cairns was victorious in the World Youth Championships in tenpin bowling.
The Fulwell teenager beat Australia's Sam Cooley 210-139 to take the gold medal in the boys' final in Helsinki.
It came after he just edged through the six-game preliminaries, which saw 146 young bowlers challenging for the right to finish in the top four and challenge for medals.
Cairns was equal-fourth with Germany's Christian Birlinger on 1,343 (223.83 average) and forced claimed the last place for the play-offs due to the higher last game, 233 to Birlinger's 159.
The Sunderland lad did not waste his chance, beating top seed Park Jong-Woo (Korea) 246-214 in the semi-final. Park had led the field of 146 players from 46 countries with 1,447 points over the six-game preliminaries.
Aussie Cooley swept aside No.3 seed Francois Lavoie (Canada) 211-158 in the other semi-final to set up a showdown with Cairns, who snatched an early lead and never looked back to give England their seventh gold medal in Finland.
