Sunderland boss praises five-goal striker
Steve Bruce today hailed Fraizer Campbell as the success story of Sunderland's week-long stay in Portugal.
"And not just because of his five goals," said the Black Cats manager.
Campbell scored Sunderland's late equaliser in their 1-1 draw against Brighton a week ago and then all four of the Wearsiders' goals in the 4-2 defeat of Hull City last weekend. But his overall play, fitness and attitude made a winning package, according to Bruce.
"Fraizer did very in terms of his goalscoring, there's no doubt about that," admitted the Sunderland manager.
"For me, he has been the stand-out player of our stay here, but not just for his goals – he's been terrific all round.
"It would be a bit of an exaggeration to say that he went away a boy and came back a man this summer – but it wouldn't be that much of an exaggeration.
"Sometimes you see that in pre-season – you see a player who just seems to have come on completely in the space of the break.
"And Fraizer has been that player as far as we're concerned."
