Sunderland were denied their first back-to-back wins for 48 matches by a heart-breaking 90th-minute strike on Sunday.
One-time Sunderland target Adam Johnson made Man City's second-half pressure pay when he curled in a precision shot to beat the outstanding Craig Gordon.
That effort cancelled out Kenwyne Jones' header on nine minutes.
The assist for Sunderland's goal came from back-in-favour Frenchman Steed Malbranque, who crossed for Jones to loop the ball past Shay Given.
City were made to look average by a confident Sunderland side in the first half. The closest they came to opening the scoring was a Gareth Barry shot which fizzed wide on the half-hour mark.
The visitors had the upper hand for most of the second period, with Craig Gordon forced into a string of good saves.
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was without his two first-choice central midfielders for today's clash.
Lee Cattermole joined the suspended Lorik Cana on the sidelines with a hamstring problem as Kieran Richardson returned from a calf problem along with David Meyler, who got a chance to redeem himself following his sending-off at Portsmouth.
Opposite number Roberto Mancini made just one change to the side which beat Chelsea 4-2 last time out with Shaun Wright-Phillips replacing Sunderland-born Adam Johnson.
