Local football: Stout breaks Birtley hearts
Birtley Town exited the Durham Challenge Cup at Newton Aycliffe last night.
In August, Birtley – second bottom in the Skilltrainingltd Northern League Division Two – lost 2-1 to Aycliffe and they endured a similar result despite an improved performance by Scott Oliver's side.
Dion Raitt converted a 16th-minute penalty, but Birtley battled back and deservedly equalised with a good goal from Nick Evans.
Midway through the second period, skipper Paul Stout clinched Aycliffe's victory with a sweet volley into the top corner.
They now visit Billingham Synthonia in the last eight early in the new year.
Consett defeated Norton for the second time in four days. Marcus Laing gave the Teessiders a perfect start, but Andrew Cuthbertson, Michael Coulthard and David Pounder swept the Steelmen into a quarter-final tie at either Boldon CA or Crook Town, who meet on Saturday.
Michael Chapman's goal proved sufficient for Jarrow Roofing to edge their derby at South Shields. The Second Division side host Shildon in the last eight.
Bedlington Terriers came from behind to defeat Marske United 3-2 after extra time in their thrilling Brooks Mileson Memorial Cup tie.
Stephen Gamble netted twice for Marske, but David Southern, captain Peter Snowdon and Anthony Chapman gave Terriers the edge.
