Local football: RCA are no match for Shildon

Sunderland RCA exited the Brooks Mileson Memorial Cup at the Second Round stage when Shildon coasted to a 4-0 victory at Meadow Park.

Manager Neil Hixon went 4-5-1 but soon found his side two goals down as Andrew Johnson and Lee Chapman struck in the first 15 minutes.

Just before the interval, recent signing Johnson was again on target and after the break RCA changed their formation to two up front with Paul Taylor replacing Peter Benson.

Niall McArdle came on for Paul Wardle and, playing down the bank, the home side began to pose problems for the Shildon defence.

Only a superb save by Shildon goalkeeper Keith Finch denied Mark Davison and although Gary Shields had the ball in the net, his effort was ruled offside.

Despite exerting considerable pressure in the second period, the Wearsiders were unable to find a way through the visitors' defence and when Johnsoncompleted his hat-trick in the 69th minute, it was all over.

Newton Aycliffe also reached Round Three, defeating West Auckland Town with a brace of goals by the former Chester-le-Street striker Elliott Gardner. Stuart Banks had given West an early advantage.

Esh Winning moved out of the bottom three in the Skilltrainingltd Northern League First Division for the first time in several weeks when they defeated Billingham Town 2-1 at Waterhouses.

In the Northumberland FA Senior Cup, Whitley Bay reached the semi-finals with a 3-1 win at West Allotment Celtic whose only scorer was Paul Gardner after Phil Bell, Paul Robinson and Chris Moore had netted for the Seahorses.
