Local football: Moors suffer title blow
Spennymoor, until recently odds-on favourites to clinch the Skilltrainingltd Northern League First Division title, must be looking over their shoulders after gaining just one point from their last two games.
Following a goalless draw at the weekend, they surprisingly lost 2-1 at Bishop Auckland last night.
A cracking derby saw Bishops take a 22nd-minute lead as Simon Ord buried a tremendous shot into the bottom corner, giving keeper Craig Turns no chance.
Early in the second period, Ryhope cricketer Arjun Purewal sent in a
looping header for 2-0 and there were only five minutes left as Matty Tymon threw Moors a lifeline with his close-range finish.
Despite five minutes of stoppage time, Bishops held on and have now beaten Spennymoor twice this season.
Moors' lead has been trimmed to six points although second-top Dunston UTS have played four more games. Andy Bulford's goal earned them victory over Ryton.
Whitley Bay are the more serious challengers, nine points off the top with a game in hand. They defeated Newcastle United Reserves 3-1 in their Northumberland Senior Cup semi-final last night.
Paul Robinson, Paul Chow and David Coulson struck, with Wesley Baheng replying.
Reigning champions Newcastle Benfield extended their unbeaten run to 11 with a 5-0 drubbing of bottom club Morpeth, with John Campbell (2), Shaun Bell, Stephen Young and Jason Milligan (own goal) scoring.
Ashington outgunned South Shields 4-2, leading through Alex Benjamin (3) and Glen Taylor before David Graham scored twice in the last three minutes.
Birtley Town remain adrift at the bottom of Division Two after losing 3-2 to visitors Crook Town, for whom Jonathan Agar recorded a hat-trick. Owen Peterson and Richard Latimer replied.
Jarrow Roofing will meet Whitehaven in the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup fourth round after Craig Nelson's hat-trick clinched a 3-0 win at Team Northumbria.
