Local football: Jennings at double to spark RCA romp

SUNDERLAND RCA, who only just missed out on promotion last time, made a winning start in Division Two at Prudhoe Town, without ever hitting top gear.

Andy Jennings led the way with a brace, backed by strikes from Andrew Bowes and Keith Graydon against a home side who ended with 10 men.

Horden CW though, much fancied for promotion, suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at home to Team Northumbria. Dean Critchley ran through for the visitors' early opener, but Horden levelled when Chris I'Anson's free-kick was spilled by the keeper before Jamie Arthur eventually forced it home.

Critchley turned Michael Joseph before firing the visitors ahead again, with Michael Ross adding a third right on half-time.

Horden improved on the resumption, but managed just one goal, Darren Atkinson's corner being headed home by Jonathan French. Anthony Dobell and Paul Atkinson went closest to equalisers.

Washington were sunk 5-1 at newcomers Whitehaven, trailing 4-0 (including a Chris Jewals own goal) before Gary Dixon replied.

Last season's basement side, Brandon United, twice levelled through Paul Dixon in their 2-2 draw at Birtley Town for whom Barry Smith struck both goals.

Crook Town played the last 23 minutes with 10 men following Matthew Coad's dismissal for dissent but they still forced a 0-0 draw at Norton.

Esh Winning thumped Whickham 4-1 despite trailing to Ian Robson's goal.

Craig Coates (2), Michael Fort and Nicky Martin did the damage.

Relegated Jarrow Roofing opened with an encouraging 2-1 victory at Guisborough, courtesy of Chris Archer's brace.
