Local football: Devine inspiration as late penalty seals win for Horden

Horden CW eased their position near the bottom of Division One when a last-minute penalty earned them three crucial points against West Allotment Celtic.

Manager Craig Veart was delighted with Kevin Devine's first-half volley but after 51 minutes, a defensive lapse allowed Daniel Hall to equalise.

With time running out, Devine weaved his way into the penalty area and when he was brought down, calmly converted the penalty.

Horden's Neil Campbell, who was only on the field for 10 minutes, was sent off in the 89th minute after receiving a second yellow card.

Chester-le-Street have now conceded 55 goals after leaking five to Billingham Town, who started the day just a point ahead of the Cestrians.

The Teessiders though dominated the 90 minutes. Shaun Clark (2) and John French had them three goals ahead by the interval and in the second period Clark completed his hat-trick.

Chris Musgrave added to the Cestrians' woes whose only consolation came from Nathan Fisher in the last few minutes.

Bishop Auckland suffered an even bigger defeat at the hands of South Shields, who are a vastly improved side compared to last season when they just avoided relegation.

They hit Bishops with an 8-1 defeat as the goals flowed from Stephen Ramsey (2), Tony Coe (2), David Graham, Johnny Wightman, Craig Armstrong and Lee Paul Scroggins. Wayne Gredziak netted for Bishops when they were already sevengoals behind.

Tow Law Town's four-match winning sequence under new manager Dave Hagan came to an end at Billingham Synthonia who won with a stoppage-time goal by James Magowan.

Danny Craggs had given the Lawyers the lead before Danny Earl equalised with 13 minutes remaining.

Consett moved into the top six with victory at third-placed Ashington.

An Andrew Burton own goal gave the Colliers an early second-half lead but the Steelmen quickly retaliated and after Gary Ormston's equaliser, Steve Huggins was on the mark with the winning goal.

In Division Two, Sunderland RCA's top-of-the-table clash at Whitehaven was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

At the other end of the table, Birtley Town are now bottom after losing at Seaham Red Star whose matchwinners were Anthony Dunn and Michael Mennell.

Darlington RA moved off the basement for the first time in weeks with a surprise victory over Gillford Park who would have jumped into fourth place had they won.

Chris Burton fired RA in front and after Ian Johnston levelled, John McKie netted the winner five minutes from time.

Washington's poor run of results was extended by Newton Aycliffe for whom Elliott Gardner scored the only goal in the first period.

Brandon United were comfortable winners at Hebburn Town thanks to Matthew Hornsby, Tim Bowman and Stephen Fothergill. Hebburn's Carl McMann fired well wide of goal from the penalty spot.

FA Carlsberg Vase holders Whitley Bay reached Round Three when two goals in the last nine minutes by Lee Kerr and Phil Bell saw off a strong challenge from Alsager Town before a crowd of 606 at Hillheads.

Spennymoor Town romped to a 5-1 victory at Bedlington Terriers where they led by three goals from Gavin Cogden, Steve Capper and Chris Emms inside 24 minutes.

Steve Bowey reduced the deficit but a brace of goals from Gary Waite swept Moors to an emphatic win.

Gavin Barton and Darren Kokes earned Crook Town victory over Baccup Borough and Shildon progressed by a similar score at Congleton Town with Andrew Johnson and Warren Byrne the marksmen.

Dunston UTS went out to last season's beaten finalists Glossop North End, who won with an early strike from Danny Yates.

The shock result of the round was Newcastle Benfield's defeat at home to Marske United.

Ben Thompson and Danny Brunskill were Marske's heroes after Stewart Morris had given Benfield the early advantage.

West Auckland Town have won just once but they were too good for Whickham and roared to victory thanks to Ian Maddison, Anthony Lowery (og) and Stuart Banks (2).
