Keane closes in on Sunderland keeper

Marton Fulop is on the verge of clinching a move to Ipswich Town after turning down Spanish club Hercules earlier this month.

The deal was close to being done last night as all sides moved together to make the move happen.

And for Fulop it means he is close to achieving his ambition of being a guaranteed first-team keeper – a position he never enjoyed at Sunderland or previous club Tottenham Hotspur.

Unlike several of the players Sunderland have been looking to unload this summer, there has been no end of interest in Fulop.

Spanish club Hercules, newly promoted to La Liga, Spain's top flight, were the latest club to show an interest in the Hungarian international, joining the likes of Champions League side s Anderlecht and Olympiakos.

Two Premier League clubs also inquired but one of the sticking points in any deal has been the 27-year-old's determination that he will be first-choice keeper at whatever club he joins.

Fulop has had enough of being an understudy and is intent on making his name as a first-team regular, even if it means dropping down a division.

Ipswich have offered him that chance and while all sides are keen that the deal's done, some details have still to be agreed.

* Former Sunderland striker Jon Stead is ready to leave Ipswich Town.

Boss Keane is revamping his squad at Portman Road and Stead is set for a 225,000 move to Bristol City.

Steve Bruce's son Alex is also on his way out of Suffolk and could join on-loan Black Cats player Nyron Nosworthy at Sheffield United.
