Hartlepool: Monkhouse wanted by old mentor

New Brighton manager Gus Poyet was today linked with a January swoop for Hartlepool United winger Andy Monkhouse.

Reports in the national press suggest former Chelsea midfielder Poyet, who was named as the Seagulls boss last week, is interested in Monkhouse and will make a bid for the 29-year-old when the transfer window opens.

Poyet worked with Monkhouse when assistant to Dennis Wise during the pair's brief tenure at Swindon Town and may well see the winger as possessing the right character to move Brighton away from the wrong end

of the table.

Money is unlikely to be an obstacle for Poyet with the Seagulls spending big during the summer and expected to do so again in January.

But it would be a major surprise if Pools were willing to let one of their key players go, particularly after Monkhouse signed a new contract at Victoria Park during the summer.

The former Rotherham player is also happy at Pools and is settled at his south Yorkshire home.

He is one of only four players in the Pools side to have been an ever-present this season and is well-regarded by director of sport Chris Turner after previously enjoying a hot and cold relationship with former boss Danny Wilson.

Meanwhile, goalscorer Gary Liddle today admitted Huddersfield Town handed Hartlepool a lesson on Saturday.

Liddle opened the scoring, but the Terriers pulled away to a 2-1 win after a one-sided second half. He said: "It was just disappointing that in the second half we couldn't get out of our own half.

"It showed the difference in quality between the two teams.

"Any opportunity they had, the ball would be in the box and for us as defenders, we were thinking here we go again.

"But in the first half we kept them at bay and obviously Lee Clark (Huddersfield manager) has given them a rally at half-time and they've handed us a lesson.

"They are a powerful team and a lot of the lads are tipping them to get promoted because of the amount of hunger they are showing."
