Gateshead set to return

Cross-country back after 10 years.

The Gateshead International Cross Country is to return to the Riverside Bowl, on the banks of the Tyne, after an absence of 10 years.

Reclamation work put an end to this prestigious meeting but now the course has been re-built for the event on Saturday, November 10.

This new facility comes just a year after the 15million indoor track and field events area was opened.

Runners will be offered a testing course alongside Gateshead International Stadium with plenty of hills and also fast stretches, which makes it ideal viewing for spectators.

The 15,000 plus prize fund is a record for a UK Cross Challenge meeting and Gateshead Council hope this will attract some of Europe's top endurance runners.

Gateshead has a proud history of staging world-class events, having staged the World Cross Country Championships in 1983.

There are races for all age groups and you can enter online at www.ukathletics.net or telephone for an entry form to 0191 433 6900.

Derwentside Athletics Club will stage another new event on the North East fixture list on Sunday, October 21. It is the challenging Hellhole multi-terrain race on an out-and-back route, which incorporates Hellhole Wood, hence the name.

For 21 years the Stanley-based club hosted a 10-mile road event, but due to ever-increasing costs of traffic-management it has decided it's no longer viable.

Race secretary Carol Greenwood said: "I think competitors will enjoy the new course. It's always sad when established races like ours have to fold,

"We have struggled in recent years to make ends meet, but this time it was decided that it wasn't practical any more. It was just far too expensive.''

Changing is at Tanfield School Specialist College. The club plan to promote a 3k fun run at 9.30am, followed by a 10k an hour later.

Entries forms are available from Carol Greenwood, Oxford House, North Road, Stanley, Co Durham DH9 8EZ.
