Foot ready to impress

Glen Foot bursts onto the professional scene this weekend with many looking forward to him living up to his reputation.

Foot was one of the most exciting amateurs around in his days with Sunderland ABC, but now he's joined the paid ranks after signing a deal with Frank Maloney.

The Marley Pots welterweight makes his pro debut against Ramsgate's Vinny Woolford at Rainton Meadows Arena on Saturday on the undercard of Steve Molitor's IBF world super-bantamweight title defence against Jason Booth.

Woolford, 28, has won half of his six pro contests to date, two of them inside the distance.

And Maloney can't wait to see his new man in the flesh after studying DVDs of the 22-year-old's amateur career.

The promoter said: "Glen Foot's got a bit of a reputation already and I haven't seen him fight yet.

"Since I signed Glen, people have been telling me I've got a good one there.

"I know he was a relentless fighter as an amateur – a real crowd-pleaser – but this is his first pro bout and he'll be on a learning curve for a while.

"I really think he has all the attributes to do well."

Another Sunderland rookie, lightweight Kirk Goodings, gets his fifth professional bout on Saturday in what looks like a well matched contest against Liverpool's Lee Jennings, who has four wins and a single defeat on his five-fight record.

"I've been really happy with Kirk," said Maloney. "He's taken to the pro game very well and has impressed a few people.

"These are still early days for these young lads but they've done everything asked of them."

With Tony Jeffries, West Rainton's Martin Ward and South Shields-based George Watson all on the big world title card, there's a strong North East feel to Saturday's show.

Tickets price 35 and 95 (ringside) are available from Phil Jeffries on 07747 611020.
