Cattermole set for captaincy
Lee Cattermole looks set to be Sunderland's stand-in captain against Manchester City tomorrow – if fit.
The midfielder has not been able to train at 100 per cent since Tuesday's morale-boosting 4-0 home win over Bolton.
He is favourite to take the armband in the absence of the suspended Lorik Cana, who begins a two-match ban for reaching 10 yellow cards.
But Michael Turner and John Mensah are also candidates and Bruce is laid back about the need to find a new keeper of the armband.
He said: "With the way everyone played on Tuesday, I don't have to worry too much about the captaincy. If they reproduce that level of performance, it's not a problem.
"But I'm in the fortunate position to have two or three people capable of taking the captaincy and providing good leadership. Lee is one of them, but I could mention Michael, John and perhaps one or two more who could lead the team by example.
"In a way, I hope I don't need a captain. If the lads show the same hunger, desire and motivation as they did against Bolton, we'll be Ok and give Manchester City a game."
