A DEJECTED Phil Bardsley admits he was gutted that Sunderland couldn’t take home the Capital One Cup for their “sensational” supporters.

But Sunderland’s longest-serving first-team player says the Black Cats must accept that cup winners Manchester City lifted the trophy thanks to a pair of stunning strikes.

More than 30,000 Sunderland fans produced a raucous atmosphere at Wembley, as the Wearsiders competed in their first major final since 1992.

They were sent into delirium when Fabio Borini netted his sixth goal of the season, yet Sunderland’s afternoon ultimately ended in disappointment after being pegged back by Man City during the second half.

“The fans were absolutely sensational,” said Bardsley.

“They always travel in their thousands to see us wherever we are playing in this country or whatever the competition.

“They deserved a day out at Wembley and I just wish we could have got them the cup to go with it, but we were undone by two wonder goals.”

Borini’s 10th minute goal was just reward for an impressive opening half from the Black Cats, who were by far the brighter of the two sides.

But a double whammy of majestic strikes from Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri proved to be a bridge too far for Gus Poyet’s side, with Jesus Navas adding the third on the break at the death.

“It’s been a tremendous effort from all the players, manager and staff to get to the final of this competition,” added Bardsley.

“It’s just disappointing to lose.

“But we’ve lost to two wonder goals there. Sometimes you have to hold your hands up when the opposition side do that.

“It’s tough to take, but you have to accept that City are a top team as well.

“We’ll try to enjoy this as much as we can and then dust ourselves down for next week.”
