ST CHAD’S put on a magnificent performance to comfortably beat Durham CA 9–1 in their Sunderland and District Table Tennis League clash.

Colin Hunt won Durham’s only set in the Division One game when beating Saints’ debutant Adam Curran.

Hunt played extremely well against the experienced Jimmy Scope, but was narrowly defeated in the fifth and deciding end.

Thompson Insurance A continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 7–3 win over West CA A, but were pushed all the way in a very entertaining game.

Thompson’s Dave Blackburne had wins over Northumberland County player, Salter, Durham County player, Williamson, and former Durham County player, Shingler.

Thompson’s Chris Blake (Durham County) was narrowly defeated by Salter, but won his remaining two sets and the doubles set with Blackburne.

Allan Thompson’s vital win over West CA’s Williamson ensured a hard-fought 7–3, and maximum points, win for Thompson Insurance A.

St Gabriel’s A recorded their second win of the season with a 9–1 victory over Thompson Insurance B.

St Gabriel’s Dave Robson (Durham County) eased through his sets without losing and was closely supported by his team-mates George Gibson (3) and Tom Bainbridge (2). Robson and Bainbridge combined to take the doubles.

The stand-out game in Division Two was the entertaining match between hosts St Gabriel’s B and runaway leaders Sacriston St Bede’s A.

St Gabriel’s were forced to concede three sets due to the late withdrawal of Mark Burton.

Despite this early setback. St Gabriel’s Dave Revell and Geoff Young played extremely well and were unlucky not to pick up a point from the game.

The match between Dave Revell (St Gabriel’s) and Jon Manson (St Bede’s) saw Manson take the first 13–11.

Revell dictated the play in the second and took it 11–9. Revell had the upper in the third to make it 2-1.

Revell grew in confidence as the match progressed and eventually took the fourth end 11–6, to win the set for St Gabriel’s.

The game between Geoff Young (St Gabriel’s) and Paul Dale (St Bede’s) saw some excellent table tennis from both players.

Dale took the first end 11–7, but Young responded to that the second 11–5.

Young had game point (10–9) in the third but Dale played a forehand winner to take the end into deuce. Dale eventually won 13–11 with another forehand smash.

Despite this set-back, Young continued to play well and eased his way into a 6–4 lead.

Young gained in confidence and edged into a demanding 8–4 lead.

Young managed to save the a set point, but unfortunately failed to win another and ultimately lost to Dale by the narrowest of margins.

Smith (Sacriston) lost to Young, but went on to beat Revell in a very entertaining game.

Revell lead 2-1, but in the fourth he let a 5–1 lead slip to eventually lose 11–8. This forced the game into a fifth and deciding end.

Revell never really recovered from a bad start and eventually lost 11–7.

Manson, who has just returned to the game, capped a good display with a great 3 1 victory over St. Gabriel’s Young.

Sacriston St Bede’s C had an excellent 7–3 win over St Gabriel’s C to continue their strong start to the season, which has seen them winning four out of their opening five matches in Division Three.

Their only loss came against current leaders St John’s A 6-4. McPherson (2), Grant (2) and Maher (2) did the damage for St Bede’s with Wooding, Ray and Douglas winning a set each in reply for St Gabriel’s. St Bede’s took the doubles set 3-1 to ensure they gained maximum points for their 7–3 victory.

St John’s B had an emphatic 10–0 win over Lanchester CC to continue their unbeaten start to the season. Alex Smith, Gary Anderson and Tony Watson remained unbeaten for the Saints.
