Spurs show was Dazzling
I might change the name of this column to Mystic Gary's Report if I have as much luck as I did last Tuesday with my predictions!
I was walking around the house on Sunday afternoon when I caught sight of last week's column in the Echo, with one headline talking about how Spurs would be a mouthwatering game and another saying don't be surprised if Darren Bent had a big part to play.
Right on both counts as it turned out.
But in all honesty, I didn't realise just how mouthwatering, or just how big a part.
The game against Tottenham Hotspur proved to be the most exciting and entertaining of the season.
And rarely can anyone have as much involvement in a game as to score two goals AND have two penalties saved.
I'm still getting my breath back from the weekend because that was truly some game!
My colleague on Real Radio, Chris Cooper, said to me after the game: "Imagine if that was the first game you'd ever been to? You'd be hooked for life!"
And I could see where he was coming from. It was a pleasure to be there and that sort of game is why we all go to football games and why we all keep coming back.
From the very first minute, when Darren Bent scored against his old side, the game was full of incident and drama.
And it says a lot about it that there was so much more to talk about than simply the collector's item of seeing one side awarded THREE penalties in the same match.
But I've got to say that it was a win which Sunderland thoroughly deserved.
I don't know if I was in the minority here but when Peter Crouch scored to make it 2-1, I didn't find myself fretting too much.
Sunderland were so much in the right frame of mind that I just knew they would give as good as they got for the remainder of the game.
There have been times when Sunderland have been struggling this season and found themselves in that situation, where you immediately feared the worst.
But Sunderland were so positive and focused that I wasn't surprised to see them not only hold on to the lead but extend it in such fabulous fashion with a great, late goal.
