FORMER Sunderland star Gary Smith’s dream of a first World Singles title were dashed in the second round after Scotland’s Alex Marshall inflicted an 8-3,11-6 defeat.

The opening set saw Marshall dominate and HE opened up a 7-2 lead after six of the nine-end set, before securing it in eight ends.

Smith made a cracking start to the second set by collecting a four on the first end, only for Marshall to claw his way back to lead 9-5 after seven ends.

Smith stopped the rot on the eighth end with a single but needed a four on the final end, only for Marshall to claim a double and seal the second set.

FERRY GOOD SHOW!

SUNDERLAND’S Senior A team turned around a ten-shot deficit to record a vital 55-38 (5-0) win against The Parks B in the latest round of Inter Club senior league fixtures.

The turning point came when Billy Ferry’s quartet of Pat Collins, Arthur Baker and Fred Knubley collected a maximum eight on the way to a 22-10 win over K.Thompson.

This lifted the other two Sunderland rinks as they both turned around deficits,

Joe Flett, Ronnie Robson, Ray Robinson and Bobby Graham defeated B.Blyth 16-13, while Bobby Rollason, Billy Hearne, John Jones and Tommy Jopling defeated B.Bolam 17-15.

The win leaves the current play-off holders requiring a single point from their final two games to seal a play-off place.
