Simpson the ace as Durham finish third in Big Six

DURHAM finished a creditable third in the “Big Six” – the Northern Counties Championship at Manchester on Wednesday.

Durham sat second after the first round of the six-man competition, only three shots behind Lancashire.

But they failed to maintain the pressure and slipped to third place overall, on 875 shots, five adrift of runners-up Yorkshire and 16 behind champions Lancashire.

Whickham’s James Simpson won the prize for the best morning round with an impressive 67.

He finished with the best overall total for Durham, posting 71 for an aggregate 138.
