SUNDERLAND Broom seconds beat Hartlepool Caledonians 2-1 to secure their first win of the season in the men’s hockey North East League Intermediate 1 at the sixth attempt.
Hopes will be high of a second successive victory when they go to bottom club Newcastle University fourths on Saturday, with the students beaten in all five matches so far, albeit all by a single-goal margin.
In Intermediate 2, Broom’s thirds could not raise a team and scheduled hosts Redcar firsts were handed a walkover 3-0 win.
The thirds are due to entertain Stockton fourths at Sandhill View on Saturday (12.15pm).
Sunderland firsts, meanwhile, forced a 1-1 draw at Marton Furness in the North League’s Second Division North.
This Saturday, the Wearsiders host third-top Leeds club Chapeltown at Sandhill View (2pm).
H Durham University firsts take a break from England Hockey League action this weekend, having picked up a hard-earned 1-1 draw at Northern Conference leaders Bowdon last week.
The third-top students led with Landon Morley’s early penalty corner, but were pegged back by Ollie Davies in the 49th minute at Maiden Castle. Durham return to action at Belper on November 11 (2pm).
