Sea Angling: Beginners' luck helps out father and son

The quality and the quantity of fish at the moment are varied.

Some good cod are showing along the coastline with fish to over 7lb from several sources, but the decent fish can be few and far between on some days.

The best story is of two novices, father and son, who have never cast a line before being taken to the Students Accommodation area of the Wear by Ernie Hunter, of Eastenders SAC, last Saturday afternoon.

The son took no less than 16 codling of which the best was a nice seven pounder. The father also had luck with fish to 4lb, while the expert could not do better than one of just under 4lb. Beginners' luck?

There were some good fish taken in competitions over the Christmas holiday. The Boxing Day George Mulholland Charity competition, arranged by Seaham SAC, had 61 rods out with 12 taking 15 fish for 26.85lb.

This was a heaviest single fish match with Steven Moyle taking the best, a codling of 3.46lb, followed by Darren Swan (3.21lb) and Lee Burton (3.07lb).

The heaviest catch was by Andy Byrom with three fish for 3.49lb and the pairs' pool winners were Byrom and George Hope for four at 4.12lb with Steven Moyle and P Robson next (one at 3.46lb). The sum of 743.50 was raised for the RNLI.

Sunday's Easington Colliery Rovers Open had 168 entrants of whom 27 entrants weighed in. Chris Hossack took the top prize of 400 for a 3lb 1oz codling from the Green Wall at Seaham. He was just pipped into second place for the heaviest aggregate catch by another angler who weighed in five for 3lb 2oz.

Earlier in the week, last Tuesday's Ryhope Sweepstake attracted just 12 anglers with only one prize available. Four weighed in but the winner was Richie Walton for an 8lb 2oz cod from Roker Beach just in front of the sculpture.

Fifteen fished the following night's Eastenders Roving Sweepstake and seven weighed in eight codling and a flounder. Darren Welsh took first and fourth prizes with 5lb 9oz and 3lb 3oz from Shields Walkway with Barry Wright second for a 4lb codling from Johnsons and Ernie Hunter third (3lb 9oz from the Students Accommodation).

There is still plenty of action on the piers with some good whiting showing as the sea eases off, and there ought to be a few codling in the Wear. The problem is availability of decent bait.

Competitions: Sunday – Sunderland SAA 1-5pm; Tuesday – Ryhope Roving Sweepstakes 7-10pm; Wednesday – Eastenders Roving Sweepstake 7-10pm; Sunday, January 10 – Seaham SAC 10am-3pm, Sunderland SAA 1-5pm.
