Schools football: Super Sunderland keep on winning
Sunderland Boys U14s maintained their winning record with a 3-0 victory over Chester-le-Street.
Both sides looked to push forward and coped well in what turned out to be torrential rain.
It was Sunderland who applied the early pressure. They forced a corner from which captain Charlie Lynn scored with a powerful header.
Chester-le-Street continued to attack but struggled to deal with the attacking runs made by Martin Smith from midfield.
Smith was fouled about 30 yards from goal and proceeded to take the free-kick himself, curling it into the top corner.
The game continued to be open in the second half and Chester-le-Street got a boost after Sunderland missed a penalty with 10 minutes to go.
Finally, another set-piece saw Johnny Phoenix score Sunderland's third goal from a well-directed header.
Sunderland Boys have now won their last six games, scoring 23 and conceding none.
In inter-schools action St. Aidan's U12s continue to lead the way and maintained their 100 per cent record with another superb performance against Southmoor where they recorded another 10-0 victory.
Sandhill View also maintained their unbeaten record when they beat Monkwearmouth 3-2.
Monkwearmouth returned to winning ways, however, when they beat Red House Academy 7-3.
In the U13s, Seaham have shown good recent form and as a result have seen themselves rise to third in the table.
They recorded two victories against Souhtmoor and Hetton, 2-1 and 4-3 respectively.
Hetton were also on the wrong end of another tight game with Houghton Kepier when they were edged out 2-1.
Other games saw Sandhill View and Southmoor share the points in a 1-1 draw.
St. Aidan's returned to winning ways with a convincing 5-0 win at home Houghton Kepier and Castle View saw off Academy 360 with a 4-2 win.
In the U16s league, Venerable Bede entertained Southmoor and maintained
the unbeaten record in their league campaign.
Bede played some excellent football and threatened on numerous occasions.
Their efforts were rewarded with a 3-0 victory, the goals coming from Dan Mason, Ben Lilley and from captain James Cook.
Last year's champions Castle View have experienced mixed fortunes in their league campaign. They comfortably beat Thornhill 7-1 and Monkwearmouth 7-3 to put them top of the U16 league.
They did, however, suffer a setback when they were beaten 4-3 by Farringdon.
Castle View's county cup form has also been impressive. They have reached the quarter-finals of the competition with victories against Whitburn 5-1 and Easington 7-3.
They now play Biddick Sports College in the quarter-final.
Thornhill suffered two defeats when they were beaten 2-1 by Farringdon and 3-0 at home to Hetton.
