School's football: Luke seals trophy glory

St. Aidan's triumphed in the Sunderland Schools U13 five-a-side tournament thanks to a goal in the final from Luke Hodgson.

The event, held at Houghton Kepier School saw teams from Kepier, Sandhill View, Venerable Bede, Red House Academy, Hetton, Academy 360, St. Aidan's and Monkwearmouth compete for the SAFC Trophy.

In Group One, Houghton Kepier and Venerable Bede both ended with five points from their three games and had to play in a play-off to see who progressed to the final against the winners of Group Two.

In their groups games, both Bede and Houghton recorded 1-0 wins against Red House Academy. Bede's goal came from Kyle Carr and Houghton's scorer was Nathan Lawrence (penalty).

Sandhill View played Red House in their last group game, still with a chance of qualifying for the final.

Red House took the lead through Connor Robinson only to see Sandhill's Kieran Henderson equalise.

Sandhill finished with three points and Red House with one.

In the play-off, Houghton showed greater fight and progressed to the final with a 1-0 win over Venerable Bede.

Group Two was also close. Academy 360 finished with two points and finished in fourth place. Monkwearmouth drew all of their games and finished third.

The crucial game in the group saw St. Aidan's beat Hetton 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from Matthew Thomas.

St Aidan's finished top of the group with five points and progressed to the final to meet Houghton.

Hetton finished second with four points, beating Academy 360 1-0, Daniel Goffey the scorer.

The final was another close encounter and again one goal was enough to settle it.

St. Aidan's were victors with Hodgson the goal hero.

The U14 tournament on the same night saw Monkwearmouth lift the Rendall Shield.

In Group One, Sandhill View progressed as group winners after recording one win and one draw from their two games.

The deciding game was their clash with Red House where they were 1-0 winners.

In Group Two, Monkwearmouth proceeded to the final with the same results as Sandhill after beating St. Aidan's 1-0 and drawing 0-0 with Hetton.

The final was extremely close and both defences were excellent. The game was finally decided by a penalty shoot-out with Monkwearmouth edging it 3-2 in a dramatic finish.

Venerable Bede maintained their unbeaten start to the season in the U15 league with a victory away at Houghton Kepier.

The game produced ten goals and three players came away with hat-tricks.

Bede started the game extremely well and took the lead in the fifth minute with a goal from striker Josh Winlow.

He doubled his tally when he converted a penalty. Bede then raced to a 3-0 lead when Gary Turner finished extremely well from just inside the Houghton area.

Winlow completed his hat-trick in the first half and made it four to Bede. Further goals from Mitchel Gourley and a second for Gary Turner made it 6-0 bfore the break.

Houghton came out fighting in the second half with Callum Munroe prominent. He scored two quick goals to reduce the deficit.

Turner restored calm in the Bede team when he completed his hat-trick, but Munroe matched the achievement to make the final score 7-3.

Sunderland Boys U13s look to maintain their good start to the season when they entertain Chester-le-Street & Washington at Ryhope CW tonight (5.30pm).
