MONEY-RAISING rugby players have handed a big boost to young sports people in the city after a fun day at Ashbrooke Sports Club.
Members of Sunderland University men’s rugby team organised a mixed sports day at the ground earlier in the year involving football, hockey and rugby with players competing against each other across a range of sports.
Almost £900 was raised from the event in May but it is only now that the money has been handed over.
Rugby player Kieran Hutchinson explained: “It took a while to get all the money in and we’ve still a bit more to come, so we won’t be far away from £1,000.
“The difficulty was in deciding which charity to give the money to.
“We wanted to give it an organisation which would benefit local people and we wanted to give it to a charity where it might make a difference and not just get swallowed up.
“So we were delighted when we heard about the Sunderland Sports Fund which helps local young sports people with cash awards. It’s particularly supportive of people involved in sports which aren’t usually that well-funded.”
Chairman of the fund, former Sunderland player and manager Len Ashurst, who received the cheque from the team, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that the young lads thought about the Fund and decided to donate to us.
“Not a penny will be wasted. It will all go towards helping give young sports prospects in the Sunderland area, giving them that bit extra help they often need to be able to pursue the sport they are excelling in.”
