SUNDERLAND Under-10s’ impressive defence proved the difference between the sides as they dominated Blaydon to record a storming 50-10 win.
Their previous meeting brought a narrow Sunderland success in the County Sevens, but this time the Wearsiders’ aggression in defence and speed in attack made life hard for the Tynesiders.
Bryson Robinson’s direct running proved Blaydon’s undoing, as he crashed through to plunder six tries.
Outside him, Sam Watson, Adam Shiels, Adam Williams and Jason Ashman all claimed a try apiece.
Leading the defensive wave were Lewis Irwin, Adam Shiels and Jack Taylor, while Alex Middleton probed well around the rucks.
Sunderland also beat West Hartlepool 25-20 in an enthralling encounter.
Josh Jobling battled to make inroads into a fired-up West defence.
Despite taking the lead through Robinson’s try, Sunderland were pegged back by a determined West, who made the most of turnovers to run tries in from distance.
With the score tied at 20-20, and Robinson having all four Sunderland scores, the outstanding Williams threw himself at the visitors’ defence for the winning try.
Jose Saurith claimed a hat-trick, alongside scores for Josh Rose and Ethan Ellis, as the Reds Raiders defeated Blues Barbarians 25-10.
