SUNDERLAND Under-13s endured some horrendous weather conditions when they claimed their first ever win over Alnwick.
The Ashbrooke lads made a bright start with an early run from Louis Deathe, but the hosts hit back and forced Sunderland onto the back foot before moving the ball quickly down the line to score the first try.
They doubled their lead to 10-0 straight from the kick-off when their winger ran the full length of the field to score.
Sunderland, to their credit, fought back and a quick pass from Farai Chickumbrike sent Fletcher Jackson clear, but an excellent last-ditch tackle denied him.
Ty Hanlon, Dev Koca, Denny Robinson, Brad Wall, Aaron Dinsdale, Reece Thompson, Clayton Byrom and Deathe helped the pack surge forward on the restart, with the move eventually finished off by Chickumbrike, with Ben Hutchinson converting to cut the deficit to 10-7.
Spurred on, Sunderland then stormed in front after a lovely period of play. Jackson began the move, feeding Dean Edmundson, who beat a number of players nad timed a great pass back to Jackson, who took off into the corner to score a well-worked try, brilliantly converted by Michael Holder.
Alnwick threw everything at Sunderland in the final five minutes, and won a penalty, but great defensive work from Wall, who stole the ball as Alnwick attacked, sealed a memorable victory, with arguably their best performance of the season.
