Ashbrooke juniors enjoy try frenzy against Blaydon

SUNDERLAND Under-12s plundered a hatful of tries in an exhibition of rugby against Blaydon at Ashbrooke.

The Wearsiders got off to a great start with a try from the pacy Ben Hutchinson.

Fletcher Jackson then took off down the line to touch down in the corner for a try converted by Michael Holder.

The second half started with a great run from Hutchinson that was halted just short of the line. The ball was quickly returned by Luke Newby out wide for Dean Edmundson to score another well-worked try. Holder converted to make it 19-0.

Another excellent move by Luke released Edmundson for his second and it was converted by Hutchinson.

Blaydon hit back and reduced the scoreline to 26-7, but Sunderland were soon on top again, with Jackson grabbing his second try, converted by Hutchinson.

A Blaydon clearance was collected on the touch-line by Fletcher, who then raced in for his hat-trick, which was converted by Edmundson.

Sunderland started the last period with a brilliant mazy run by Newby and he offloaded to Fletcher, who went over again to make it 47-7.

Excellent pressure brought a try for Matthew Sanderson, and the conversion by Hutchinson completed the scoring at 54-7.

H Sunderland Under-11s drew a thriller against Blaydon 21-21.

Groark scored a try and converted it himself, but Blaydon hit back with three tries to lead 21-7.

Groark scored another try and conversion before Holder crossed in the corner to close the gap. Groark held his nerve to convert with the last kick of the game to level the scores.

The second game proved tight with Sunderland going 14-0 ahead through tries from Bland and conversions from Groark. With tries either side of half-time, Blaydon drew level, but the home side responded through Groark.

Blaydon equalized with five minutes remainin, but Groark then got his fourth try and converted it to to seal a 28-21 win.

H Sunderland Under-10s took on Westoe and Blaydon in six closely-contested games. The Wearsiders lost five times, but won their final game 40-15.

Among the scorers were Solomon (4), Goshorn (3), Stormont, Tomlinson, Archie, Donkin and Dunne.

Speedy off-loading and superb tackling saw Sunderland Under-9s overhaul Blaydon 70-45 in an exciting clash. Adam Willians and Ryan Crossley both touched down with five tries each.

Sam Watson scored a hat-trick, while Aidan Wilkinson also crossed the line.

H Sunderland Under-15s entertained last season’s County Cup finalists Billingham and put up a brave fight only to be edged out 31-27.

Sunderland scored first as Stan picked up a loose pass on halfway and blazed straight over the tryline unchallenged. Billingham responded with two tries to go ahead but Liam Dow score a great long-range try to level. Harry Connell kicked the conversion.

Billingham scored a couple of quick-fire tries at the start of the second half, but Sunderland continued to battle and were rewarded with another try from Dow. Harry Tuckwell scored late on, but Billingham held on.
