Rowell: Excitement building over Man United visit

My mouth is watering already at the thought of the Sunderland-Manchester United game at the Stadium of Light this Sunday.

And although Steve Bruce and his players probably won't agree with me, I'm pleased United still have something to play for in terms of the title race.

It matters more when there's something riding on it.

It's the last home game of the season and what a game for Sunderland to go out on.

No disrespect, but it could easily have been the likes of a Blackburn Rovers or a Bolton Wanderers, and if it had been, there might have been a little sense of anti-climax about the match.

As it is, the eyes of the footballing world will be on the Stadium of Light come 4pm Sunday.

And isn't that exactly what we want?

It's great we have such a high-profile, glamour game to end the season on and on Sunday we should see the stadium at its very best, especially as there'll be no nerves or jitters about potential relegation for once.

It's also a marvellous opportunity for Sunderland to show that they deserve to be on the same stage as United.

The game between these two teams at Old Trafford produced one of the best Sundelerland performances of the season and we were only denied a worthy victory by Anton Ferdinand's own goal in injury-time.

What Sunderland have to look for is a similar performance.

There are two teams in the game on Sunday, not just one, and Sunderland have a chance to get people talking about them and their qualities, rather than it all just being about United.
