Riders enjoy Houghton’s extravaganza

HOUGHTON CC promoted a cycling extravaganza at Hetton Lyons Country Park at the weekend that attracted a strong field of riders.

In the first event, Aaron Brown (Muddy Brown Events) clinched the Under-12’s race.

Next, the Under-16’s race was won by Josh Craven (Tyneside Vagabonds).

The final event was the Seniors/Vets/Women which was won by Brian Johnson (Barnesbury Cycle Club), with the first lady over the line being Kirsty White (PSUK).

David Stevens (HCC) was seventh in the main event and this entitled him to Houghton Cycling Club Cyclo Cross Championship.

He will be presented with the trophy at the Annual Dinner and Prize Presentation.

Other Houghton riders that took part were Peter Reed, Ben Pruden, David Stevens, Paul Robson and Ian Jobling.

In round eight of the CNXE Rat Race, at Bedlington, saw Houghton CC riders riding another Cyclox event.

The winner of the Senior event was Stuart Wearmouth (MTS Cyclesport) who completed nine laps in a time of 53.31.5.

Matt Webb (Houghton CC) was 10th in the Under 23 event, completed eight laps with a time of 54.06.0.

David Stevens was 15th, senior, completed eight laps in a time of 55.54.4.

In the Vets event, Morgan Donnelly V40 (Beacon Wheelers) was the winner after he completed seven laps in a time of 43.11.25.

Paul Whitehill V40 (Houghton CC) came in 36th and completed seven laps in a time of 45.40.9.

Paul Robson V50 (Houghton CC) came in 46th, after he completed seven laps in a time of 48.6.30.

The RTTC National Championship Hill Climb saw a field of 162 riders having an advantage of a gusting tail wind with heavy showers.

The course was an arduous 2.3 miles long, climbing the Stang in Reeth, North Yorkshire.

The event was won by Tejvan Pettinger (Sri Chinmoy RT) with a time of 7.57.7minutes.

Second place went to James Gullen (Team Hope Factory Racing) in 7.59.8 minutes and third went to Matt Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles) 8.08.1.

Mark Harrison (Houghton CC) finished 55th with a time of 9.35.0 minutes.

Other local riders were Martin Gibson (Adept Precision) finishing 81st with a time of 10.01.4 and Luke Mullen (Hetton Hawkes) finished 25th with a time of 8.50.1.

Harry Craig (Active Cycles) finished 110th with a time of 10.53.7.

In round seven of the CXNE Rat Race, at Gypsies Green, Mathew Webb (Houghton CC) finished 14th in the senior event.

Paul Whitehill was placed 23rd in the Vet 40 event and Paul Robson 13th in the Vet 50 event.

In the Houghton CC Hill Climb, Mark Harrison claimed first place.

Harrison became the Club Hill Climb Champion and will be presented with the trophy at the Annual Dinner and Prize Presentation.

In the NECCL Round 4, at Ponteland, Brian Johnson (Barnesbury CC, Vet over 40) won with a time of 49.41.

Second was John Bayley (Gosforth RC, Senior) in 51.08, with David Stevens (Houghton CC Senior) third with a time of 51.43.

Houghton CC’s annual Dinner and Prize Presentation will be held on November 29, at Hallgarth Manor.
