HOUGHTON CC’s Richie Ranson finished fourth at the Highfield Kitchens Spring Shield at Prissick on Saturday.

The 3rd/4th Category Race featured a field of over 30 riders, in freezing conditions.

Ben Halliworth (Ilkley CC) won the race, finishing half a lap ahead of the peleton.

Luke Mullen (Hetton Hawks) made a brave break away from peleton but was unable to catch Halliworth. The 17-year-old, though, showed he is a real prospect.

In the sprint for the finish, Ranson finished just outside the top three, with Sunderland Clarion rider Tony Dickinson in seventh. Houghton’s Chris Ranson finished just outside the top ten placings.

Result: 1 Ben Halliworth (Ilkley CC), 2 Grant Worrall (Achieve Skinnergater Racing), 3 Mathew Worton (Blackhawk), 4 Richie Ranson (Houghton CC), 5 Daniel Bryant (Durham Uni), 6 Ben Forsyth (ERC), 7 Tony Dickinson (Sunderland Clarion), 8 Gary Taylor (Ferryhill Wheelers), 9 Graham Wood (Achieve Skinnergate Racing), 10 Harry Craig (Motivo).

Houghton had a group of four riders – David Stevens, Dave Ranson, Ian Jobling and Paul Robson – in the 4th Category race.

Two York University riders made a break from the start but were soon reined in by the peleton. Alex Foster (Team Motivo) made a break but was eventually caught by a group of three riders – but then broke again and won by over ten seconds.

A group of three riders finished just ahead of the peleton.

In the final sprint, Dave Ranson was sixth and Paul Robson ninth, with the rest of the Houghton riders finished in the main group.
