DURHAM University firsts will have to settle for second place in the Investec Women’s League’s Conference North.
Sophie Hawkins’ side remain three points behind Beeston with just one match to play this weekend. Beeston have a far superior goal difference, and only a miracle pair of results – with a turnaround of 23 goals – can see Durham snatch the title on Saturday.
But the students can be proud of their campaign, with 14 wins and three defeats going into the final-day clash with bottom club Cannock at Maiden Castle (2pm).
Durham secured a 3-0 win at Liverpool Sefton in their penultimate match of the season, thanks to three goals in the last 17 minutes. Emma Onien made the breakthrough, then doubled the lead from a penalty corner. Anna Thompson fired home another penalty corner for the killer third on 63 minutes.
H Sunderland Broom lost 5-0 away to Newcastle University seconds in the North League’s Division Two North East.
They finish their season with a home game against winless bottom club Stockton firsts at Sandhill View on Saturday (10am). Broom are guaranteed a seventh-placed finish in the 10-team division.
