DURHAM University top Conference North in the Investec England League – a point clear of North East neighbours Whitley Bay and Tynemouth.

Sophie Clough’s unbeaten Durham side secured a fourth straight win, following their opening draw, by beating bottom club Boots 3-0 at Maiden Castle.

Philippa Lewis finally broke the deadlock with a penalty corner five minutes into the second half, with the Nottingham visitors sunk by two further goals in the final three minutes, with Alice Toynton and Lewis again converting penalty corners.

Durham visit second-bottom Ben Rhydding on Saturday.

H Sunderland Broom firsts can climb off the foot of the North League’s Division Two North if they secure a first win of the season on Sunday.

Broom, outgunned 9-0 by Durham City firsts last week, will visit Morpeth seconds in a battle of two of the bottom three, with their hosts also still to pick up a point.
