Nicole takes swimming crown

CITY of Sunderland teenager Nicole Lough was crowned the ASA 100m breaststroke (multi disability) national champion at the ASA National Youth Championships in Sheffield.

The 17-year-old recorded an impressive time of 1min 24.41sec in the category 14 event, and also produced a lifetime best swim on the way to taking fourth place in the 200m freestyle.

Adam Taylor (16) took a silver medal and broke the Northumberland and Durham record with a time of 58.19 in the 100m backstroke, narrowly missing the national title claimed by Braddan Westlake of Lincoln Vulcans in 58.14.

Taylor also finished sixth in the 200m backstroke, and swam a personal best to reach the 100m freestyle semis.

Distance specialist Danielle Huskisson (19) claimed a silver in the 800m freestyle in 8.56.28, and went on to be fourth in the 400m freestyle and eighth in the 400m individual medley.

Lucy Ellis swam a series of personal bests to finish seventh in the 400m medley, tenth in the 800m freestyle and 14th in the 400m freestyle, in which she was also the third fastest 15-year-old.

Matthew Wylie also produced his fastest ever swim in the 400m multi disability freestyle to finish sixth. He was sixth in the 50m freestyle final too, and eighth in the 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 200m medley.

Jonny Carlisle secured fifth place in the 200m backstroke final and eighth in the 100m backstroke, while Emma Sinclair reached the 200m butterfly semis to finish 17th overall. Jennifer Tatters finished 19th in the 800m freestyle.

In the ASA National Age Group Championships, Lucy Walton (14) recorded a lifetime best to take the 200m backstroke silver medal in 2.18.94, just over a second behind Shauntelle Austin (Blackpool).

Walton was also fifth in the 800m freestyle and 12th in the 200m and 400m medleys.

Laura Taylor (14) landed an impressive bronze medal in the 1,750m open water event in 20.09.00 and also finished 10th in the 800m freestyle.

Freya Rayner claimed two seventh-place finishes with lifetime best swims in the 100m and 200m backstroke. Jodi Bunker also swam a PB for 11th in the 800m freestyle. Jessica Thompson was 20th in the 400m medley.

Laura Taylor, Jodi Bunker Gabby Burdess and Lucy Walton finished 12th in the 4x200m freestyle relay, with Freya Rayner, Georgina Lamb, Lucy Walton and Laura Taylor 17th in the 4x100m medley.
