Wearside close in Clubs qualifier

WEARSIDE finished second in Saturday’s Durham County Clubs Championship qualifier at Ryton, beaten only by Brancepeth Castle.

Richard Aisbitt’s four under par 66 helped Brancepeth finish top on 212, backed by Michael Curry (72) and Daniel Fox (74).

Wearside were only three shots behind, with a five over par total of 215. David Vest posted an excellent par round of 70, backed by Howard Walton (72) and Daniel Hair (73) as they showed their mettle ahead of the championship proper at Seaham on July 19.

Durham City were next, on 218, thanks to Graeme Marchbank (70), Andrew Bell (71) and Jack Richardson (77). Ramside came in eighth (228) thanks to Stephen Foster (81), J. Hellens (79) and J. Kirkpatrick (68), just ahead of Boldon (229), for whom James Gerencser (73), youngster Rian Lamb (76) and Andrew McCarrick (80) took part.

H Finland’s Mikko Ilonen claimed his fourth European Tour title with a wire-to-wire victory in the Irish Open. He carded a final round of 70 to finish 13 under par, one ahead of Italy’s Edoardo Molinari.
